La saison US a démarré et les chaînes américaines font déjà le tri entre les succès et les échecs. Découvrez quelles séries vont continuer jusqu'à la fin de la saison et quels programmes sont les premières victimes des audiences...
The Daily Telegraph: 'two and a half hours of this left me feeling rather barked and clucked out.' ***
Screen Daily: 'Lambert's greatest talent may lie in creating characters that we care about and developing a film that brings a few fresh twists to an old familiar tale of whether love can conquer every obstacle in its path.' ****
The Guardian: 'enthralling, mysterious and intimately upsetting – a terrible demonstration of how poverty creates a space which irrational fear must fill.' ****
Time Out: 'A cerebral melodrama of the most steely, bare and brutal kind' ****
Variety: 'boasts the same formal control and somber realism that distinguished "4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days." But Mungiu's slow-burning, scrupulously evenhanded portrait of religious hysteria rarely achieves that film's gut-level intensity, leaving audiences with an accomplished but bleak 152-minute picture' ***
Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu wowed audiences in 2007 with his hard-hitting drama 4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days (4 luni, 3 saptamini si 2 zile). Known to many as the “Romanian abortion film”, it was his second feature and his first appearance at Cannes and shocked the world by snatching the Palme d’Or marking the first time that any Romanian had done so. He returned to Cannes in 2009 with a segment in the ominbus Tales from the Golden Age, which premiered in the Un Certain Regard section but Beyond the Hills is his first full feature since arriving in among the elite of world cinema.
Inspired by the true story of a young girl’s tragic death in a monastery in 2005, Beyond the Hills focuses on the friendship between two young girls, Alina and Voichita, who have just been reunited an isolated Romanian convent. Alina has spent several years in Germany, and is desperate for Voichita to return there with her, but she is content to stay in the convent where she has found happiness in her faith and a family in the other nuns and priests. Unable to understand her friend’s choice, Voichita challenges a priest, which leads the monastery to suspect that she may be possessed. With a runtime of over two and a half hours, Beyond the Hills is the longest film showing at this year’s festival and no small affair. Cannes audiences have been waiting for Mungiu’s return to the unflinching style of his previous Palme d’Or-winning effort, which could have been a Ken Loach film (in subject matter at least) if hadn't been paced and structured like a Hollywood thriller, will this do the same?
