Jeremy Irons to star in new film about St Columba

OSCAR winner Jeremy Irons is to star in a major new movie about the saint who brought Christianity to Scotland.
The film on the life of St Columba by Shadowlands director Norman Stone will be shot either in Northern Ireland or the west of Scotland.
Producers are also in talks with another A-list Hollywood star said to be interested in the project - but Jeremy is already signed up to play the saint, who came to Scotland from Ireland.
Bafta-winner Stone, whose films include Florence Nightingale and CS Lewis - Beyond Narnia, said: "Jeremy is perfect for the role. He is fascinated by Columba, especially given his Irish ancestry and connections.
"He just can't wait to get started. This will be a wartsand-all portrayal.
"I see Columba as a man of incredible faith, integrity and strength - but at times flawed.
"He struggled with hunger for power. He was cunning, brave and an independent spirit which sometimes he found difficult to fit into his holy orders.
"But he was a gifted man who changed the religious and social map of Scotland and Britain.
"He was not a saintly saint and this film will be more of a character study and a political thriller than a Christian epic.
"Columba will not wear a halo. It needs big-screen treatment and in Jeremy we have the right person to deliver the performance we are looking for."
The movie, The End Time, will be shot either in the spring or autumn of next year, with screening six months later.
Jeremy, who won an Academy Award for Best Actor for Reversal Of Fortune in 1990, worked with Stone on BBC drama The Dream in 1993.
A source close to the actor said: "He is delighted to be involved and looking forward to working with Norman."
Columba arrived in Scotland from Ireland and established a monastery on the island of Iona in 563AD.
He began converting the pagan Scots to Christianity and built several churches across the Outer Hebrides before his death at the age of 75. He is buried in Iona Abbey.

Jeremy Irons will be awarded with the first ‘Ischia Legend Award 2010′, on July 13 in Sant’Angelo, Italy. The artist enters his name in gold next to those of Sir Ben Kingsley, Dennis Hopper, Vanessa Redgrave, Hilary Swank, F. Murray Abraham, Giancarlo Giannini and Stefania Sandrelli. Jeremy Irons will be presented the award by Bille August, who directed him in The House of the Spirits, and Michael Radford, with whom he made The Merchant of Venice.

New movie project for Jeremy!
Jeremy Irons is the final piece of an impressive cast for Margin Call, the indie film by director JC Chandor that is shooting in New York City. Irons is the chief executive of a financial firm in a 24-hour period during the first signs of the near collapse on Wall Street. Irons joins Kevin Spacey, Demi Moore, Zachary Quinto, Paul Bettany, Penn Badgley, Simon Baker, Stanley Tucci and Mary McDonnell. Chandor wrote the script, and Quinto is producing with his Before The Door Pictures partners Neal Dodson and Corey Moosa, and Benaroya Pictures’ Michael Benaroya and Robert Ogden Barnum and Joe Jenckes. Myriad Pictures is selling international territories on the film, with Myriad CEO Kirk D’Amico exec producing. The film is three weeks into its shoot.
Jeremy Irons has contributed to the book Playing for Real – Actors on Playing Real People.

Jeremy Irons on playing Harold Macmillan in Howard Brenton’s Never So Good at the National Theatre:
I learned he had a sense of humour, a twinkle in his eye. He was a little shy and rather humble. I was mainly struck by his dry wit. A lot of the time he is with Anthony Eden, who was famed for his temper, he is trying to diffuse the situation.
The release date for Margin Call is expected to be 15 April 2011.
Margin Call may also screen at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah from 20-30 January 2011.
Bradley Cooper has signed on to star in drama “The Words,” which Lisa Wilson’s Parlay Films, an affiliate of GK Films, is pre-selling at Berlin’s European Film Market.
Jeremy Irons is in talks to co-star in the pic, which is the directorial debut of “Tron Legacy” scribes Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal.
Irons is scheduled to attend the Berlin Film Festival for the international preem of his “Margin Call,” which is screening in competition.
“The Words” reunites “Margin Call’s” Michael Benaroya (of Benaroya Pictures) and Untitled Entertainment’s Laura Rister and Cassian Elwes.
Benaroya, Animus Films’ Jim Young and Serena Films’ Tatiana Kelly will produce while Rister and Elwes are exec producing the pic.
Filmula’s Johnny Lin is in negotiations to co-finance and produce “The Words” with Benaroya.
Klugman and Sternthal’s script was workshopped at the Sundance Screenwriters’ Lab and appeared on the Black List, the annual list of Hollywood’s unproduced screenplays.
Story follows a writer who, at the peak of his literary success, discovers the price he must pay for stealing another man’s work.
Parlay Films will handle international sales while domestic rights will be handled by Waterfall Media/Untitled.
Cooper and Irons are repped by CAA.
